Beating Nigeria to qualify for Olympics was “African Games Revenge”- Osei Assibey – Citi Sports Online

A Ghana Athletics Vice President, Charles Osei Assibey, says Ghana’s win over Nigeria to qualify to the 2024 Olympic Games was a revenge act for Ghana missing out on the 2023 African Games gold medal to Nigeria.

At Accra 2023, Ghana finished second to Nigeria in the final of the 4×100 Metre Men’s Relay race after a slow baton change that had Ghana record a time of 38.49 seconds.

However, at the World Athletics Relays in Bahamas, Ghana finished first in Heat 2 of the Men’s 4×100 Metre Relay race ahead of Nigeria and Dominican Republic.

By finishing first and second, Ghana and Nigeria qualified to the Paris Olympics with Ghana winning the race in a time of 38.29 seconds with three of Ghana’s quartet running under 10 seconds.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports after the win, Osei Assibey spoke about how much he believed in Ghana’s qualification chances once the team polished it baton change technique and added, (Click highlighted text to read full story)

“For us at Ghana Athletics, we are so so happy because it (qualifying to the Olympics) came as a revenge to Nigeria beating us at the African Games in our own backyard. If you looked at the gap between Ghana and Nigeria, it meant that if we get the indices right, our guys will beat any team on any day.”

Ghana and Nigeria join the likes of USA set to compete in Paris later this year.
